Suzu McConnell-Wood www.vitaltheatre.org Suzu McConnel-Wood studied drama at QEHS and was a leading member of QEHS Youth Theatre. She now works in New York directing a children’s theatre group.
“Vital Theatre produces 5 original musicals for Kids each season, Sept-May. I am looking for people to help me plan the season which involves reading scripts, meeting with writers, composers, directors, designers etc. Running auditions, callbacks and creating all printed materials for the shows like posters, postcards and brochures. I need help maintaining our database which we then mail to. My favourite part of the job is on show days. I run the box office and house manage. After the show the kids get to meet the actors and get their autographs. I am there to answer any questions parents have about birthday parties, our educational program and upcoming productions. Each year we have a Children’s Theatre Benefit which I plan and this year is my first solo venture so fingers crossed we make some money! The rest of my time is spent in rehearsal, contacting press, creating press releases, speaking with schools, parents, city events planners as well as working with the Artistic Director and Education Director in the daily business of running a theatre space an in planning for the future of the Vital Theatre Company. So, there is always a lot going on! If there are any students or recent graduates that fancy coming to NY for a stint then they would find a happy…rather crazy…home at the theatre. The position is unpaid, but the experience is invaluable: I started August 2004 as an unpaid intern and now I am the Director of the Children’s Theatre…you never know what opportunity is around the corner. I would love to see some Hexhamites, so even if there are people who are just visiting please send them to see a show here!.”
