KS3 English - Year 9

The Key Stage 3 English course is aimed at developing the knowledge and understanding of students in year 9, providing them with a solid foundation for further study. Students are assessed according to the APP system. and where possible work is used to prepare students for the demands of the GCSE courses in English Language and Literature. The course covers a variety of topics and areas in English Literature, English Language and Speaking and Listening.

Half Term 1 (September - October)
Novel Study:
  • Students study a novel (e.g. Animal Farm, Alice in Wonderland, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, Lord of the Flies, etc)
  • Students explore character, setting, writer’s craft and themes in the novel.
  • Students respond to the novel through a range of creative and analytical activities
External Assessment: No
Internal Common Assessment: Yes – APP Assessment: How does the author engage the reader in the opening chapter(s) of the novel. Week beg. 17th October

Half Term 2 (November - December)
Introduction to Spoken Language:
  • Students study spoken language
  • A range of spoken language texts analysed
  • Introduction to terminology
  • Students complete an investigation into their own language

Half Term 3 (January - February)
Shakespeare anthology:
  • Students study the Shakespeare Anthology on Conflict which will also include some poetry based on this theme.
  • Students will undertake a range of activities (drama, creative writing, analysis) based on various Shakespeare and poetry texts dealing with the theme of conflict.
External Assessment: No
Internal Common Assessment: Yes – APP assessment: A comparison of two texts exploring how the writers have dealt with the theme of conflict. Week beg. 6th February

Half Term 4 (March - April)
Persuasive Writing:
  • Students analyse and create persuasive texts.
  • Students explore a range of persuasive texts including advertising, leaflets, magazines, letters and speeches.
  • Using the source material students will create their own persuasive texts.

Internal Common Assessment: Yes: APP Assessment – Write a persuasive speech from a range of topics. Week beg. 26th March

Sherlock Holmes:
  • Students read The Case of the Speckled Band as well as other Sherlock Holmes stories
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of detective genre
  • Analyse character and writer’s craft in the Holmes stories
  • Develop creative writing skills
External Assessment: No
Internal Common Assessment: Yes – APP Assessment: Using stimulus material provided write the opening chapter of a Sherlock Holmes story. Week beg. 28th May
