Additional Tests

A number of universities have admissions/aptitude tests which applicants must sit when applying for certain courses.

Students applying for medical, veterinary and dentistry courses will be expected to sit a BMAT test, Biomedical Admissions Test.

Some universities will also expect medical, veterinary and dentistry applicants to take a UKCAT test, UK Clinical Aptitude Test.

Some universities expect law applicants to take a LNAT test, National Admissions Test for Law.

Some these tests are taken at test centres in Newcastle, some are taken at QEHS. If you are consider applying for any of the above courses it is vital that you check which if any of these tests you need to take and where you take it. You can do this by going to the website of each of the tests.

You can also check by looking in the prospectus of the university you are considering applying to.

Oxford now have aptitude tests for Classics, Languages, Psychology, Geography, History, Physics, English, Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Economics and Management, and Philosophy, Politics and Economics applicants. Cambridge also have TSA (Thinking Skills Assessments) for a number of courses

However please note that other universities besides Oxbridge now require admissions tests for certain subjects!

When applying for a course requiring an aptitude test, UCAS will flag up that you need to take the test.

There are now a number of support websites for admissions and aptitude tests. One example is KAPLAN at www.kaptest.co.uk

http://www.spa.ac.uk/information/admissionstests/ gives an overview of all the tests asked for by universities

http://www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works/explore-your-options/entry-requirements#admissions gives an overview of the main admissions tests (at the very bottom of the page)

Considered advice is that whilst it is important to familiarise yourself with the format of the tests it is not really possible to “coach” yourself.

It is the responsibility of the individual student to see the Exams Officers to find out how to register for these tests.

Registration must be made early in September.
