Last weekend saw QEHS rowers competing on their home river at the Hexham Regatta. QEHS had over 90 rowers competing across the day, in a wide variety of crews. This is a great testament to the commitment to rowing shown by the athletes in our club.
Hexham Regatta always draws a good crowd of local people, who come down to watch the competition race side by side. The winning crew in each race moves on to compete against another crew, until a final decides the overall winner. The weather conditions this year were cooler than normal, which made for more comfortable racing conditions.
QEHS athletes recorded an excellent eight wins across the day.
🔵Robin and Morty won in the Open 2.
🔵Markus won in a single scull (Open 1x).
🔵Sophia and Annabelle won in WJ14 2x.
🔵Isla and Poppy won the WJ16 2x.
🔵The Year 9 boys won the Op J14 4x+, with Rufus, Hannes, Dominic, James, and cox Oscar.
🔵Markus and James won the Open J17 2x.
🔵The Year 9 girls put in an excellent performance to win the WJ14 4x+, with Gaby, Anna, Mia, Jess, and cox Constance.
🔵Finally, the senior boys recorded a win in the Open 4+, featuring John, Barnaby, James, Elliott, and cox Luke.
All athletes would like to give a big thank you to the coaches: Pam, Evie, Ellen, and the supporting parents who made this day possible. Organising such a large number of athletes is a huge commitment, and the juggling and re-rigging of boats requires a great deal of coordination. We all fully appreciate the efforts that contributed to such a successful day of racing.
It is unbelievable that we are already approaching the end of the racing season and the academic year. QEHS crews are now working towards popular events at Durham and Talkin Tarn, near Brampton in Cumbria. Our last major event is the British Rowing National Championships, which will be held in Nottingham at the end of the school year. We look forward to seeing how well our athletes perform as the season comes to a close.
Respect. Engage. Aspire.
