Installing the QEHS Certificate: Instructions for Laptops

To be able to use search engines on your school laptop, you will need to install a certificate.

Technical reason: Safe searches are now enforced through our Internet gateway and a self-signed certificate is required to do this. It also means that filter lists work regardless of whether sites use http or https.

Chrome and Internet Explorer

  • Download and open the certificate.
  • Click on the <Install Certificate> button.
  • Choose <Next> in the Certificate Import Wizard.
  • At the next stage choose the non-default “Place all certificates in the following store” option.
  • Browse and choose the “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” option. (screenshot)
  • Click on <Next>
  • Click on <Finish>
  • The new certificate details should be displayed. Click on <Yes> to install the certificate.
  • Restart the browser.

Mozilla Firefox

  • Download the certificate.
  • Options -> Advanced -> Certificates -> View Certificates
  • Under the Authorities tab Import the certificate that you have just downloaded. (screenshot)
  • Choose “Trust the CA to identify websites”.

Apple Macintosh (OS X)

  • Download the certificate.
  • Go to the downloads folder and double-click on qehs.cer
  • The Keychain Access folder should open.
  • In the Category (left pane) choose ‘Certificates’.
  • Double-click on the QEHS certificate.
  • The top option is ‘When using this certificate’. Change it from ‘Use System Defaults’ to ‘Always Trust’
  • Close the window. It may ask for confirmation: proceed with this.
