Bridge Building
As part of our STEM sessions, students were challenged to build a bridge to span a 42cm gap using only straws, paper, and sellotape. They had a budget to work with, and the bridges were then load tested. Some fantastic designs were produced, using engineering principles such as trusses.
Hexhamshire constabulary- Forensics Laboratory
Students have been asked to help the Hexhamshire constabulary deduce the driver of a crashed car and decide whether to prosecute. They were presented with a range of evidence that required them to use skills from all three sciences. Chromatography was used to link a note found on the scene with the driver, with pollen analysis and metallurgy (metal analysis) being used to confirm their identity. Stills from CCTV footage were used to work out the speed which the car was travelling. Finally, a titration was carried out to determine the blood alcohol concentration. When all the evidence has been analysed, a summary will be sent to the CPS.
