The sections below contain resources and instructions for students who are working at home.

Departments have used a variety of methods to upload online resources. We have created a crib sheet that lists all online learning platforms used by each department (broken down by year group), how to access each platform, and who to contact if you are having any issues accessing the online learning.

Most of the online platforms can be accessed via links on our Students page.

Please note that Moodle is also available as an app for mobile devices/tablets. When opening the app for the first time, you will need the web address of our Moodle site to access it on the app: https://www.qehs.net/moodle2/

If you need help accessing feedback from teachers on Moodle, please see Online Learning: How to Access Feedback (PDF) for step-by-step instructions.

The online resources for Year 9 Art can be found on Moodle: https://www.qehs.net/moodle2/course/view.php?id=480

If you have any problems or questions please contact your Art teacher by email.

The work in March, April and May was focused on new content from the Communicable Disease section.

The aim of this final term is to reinforce the GCSE content you have learnt this year from both the Communicable Disease topic and the Cells topic. It is important that you complete this work so that you move into Year 10 with a strong knowledge base.

We are not asking for work to be routinely submitted but we would like the work from 18/05 and 08/06 to be sent to your teacher for marking. The best way to do this is by using an app like Microsoft lens or cam scanner to generate a PDF of your work before emailing it to your teacher.

You will be assigned weekly Seneca tasks to be completed by your teacher, which we can see, so make sure it is done. We have also provided a column for you to tick for you to keep track of your learning.

Miss Morgan and Miss Briggs have also created a timetable of the different online dance classes that are available. This is a great opportunity to maintain your dance technique whilst staying at home, however this is an optional addition to the work set on Moodle. Continue to keep yourselves safe and find new ways to express your creativity!

Students will be working through a design-based ‘Chocolate Packaging Project’. Students (where possible) have been given a hard copy of the booklet, which contains resources, worksheets and detailed instructions for all the activities.

All resources, including the work booklet and PowerPoints of the lessons (should the students need them), are available on Moodle (Yr 9 design and technology.) The work booklet includes a hard copy of an isometric grid that students can use with underneath the design pages of their booklet.

Hour 1:

Students are to read the design problem, brief and specification for the produce, and identify their target audience. They will then complete a product analysis for three existing packaging designs, to give them an understanding of what is required for their design work.

Hour 2:

Students will produce an initial design, using isometric drawing that meets the design brief and includes information based on their findings from the product analysis tasks.

Hour 3:

Students are to identify a number of packaging symbols and consider a range of different net designs before producing a second different packaging design idea.

Hour 4:

Students will learn about different finishing techniques within packaging design and then apply their findings to a third design idea.

Hour 5:

Students will develop a net for their most recent/best chocolate package design.

Hour 6:

Students will produce a presentation drawing of their final product.

Hour 7:

Students will produce a sales poster for the new product that clearly shows their chocolate box design.

Year 9 Drama

As Year 9 drama is mostly practical for the rest of the course, this is only really relevant for students who have opted for Year 10 Drama GCSE. If you can get hold of the script DNA by Dennis Kelly, this will be a good place to start for the first week. Read the script and research themes/characters.

Please see Year 9 Drama on Moodle, This has the DNA booklet with tasks to complete if you wish to do some of these.

This will be looked at in more detail in Year 10, so there is no expectation for Year 9 students to complete work in this booklet, but if you would like a headstart aim to complete the following tasks:

Approx. 2 – 3 lessons of work: Read pages 5 and 6 of GCSE DRAMA Component 3: DNA and complete page 4. You will find key quotes about them in the script.

Approx. 2 – 3 lessons of work: Start designing ideas for costumes for each of the characters on pages 25 – 30. Use your imagination, or images online, or YouTube clips to be as detailed with costume ideas as possible. Explain on the designs what each costume idea tells the audience about that character.

If you are unable to access the DNA script, please spend time watching live theatre performances. Follow this link for live theatre free performance: https://www.whatsonstage.com/london-theatre/news/stage-shows-musicals-opera-free-stream-online_51198.html

If you scroll down to The Wind In The Willows – you can follow the link to watch this for free (they ask for a small donation).

There are also plenty of other theatre productions on YouTube – but please check with your parent/carer for permission and suitability.

On Moodle you will find Theatre evaluation booklet, which you can use to reflect on the live theatre performance.

Mrs Pollock’s email is on the weekly plan page on Moodle.

Submission of Work

Year 9 English Remote Learning – Guidance

You should all be working through the two LOL Booklets which you have access to via Moodle. You can work on either the fiction or non-fiction booklet first and tasks can be completed in any order.

We recommend that you complete two tasks per week.

  • In order to complete Literature through the Ages booklet you will need to read a novel of your choice.
  • The tasks in both booklets carry a number of points each, these numbers given you an idea of how long you should spend on the tasks.
  • Present your completed tasks neatly and collate them so that when we do return to school you are able to submit all your work together.

Possible additional tasks:

Wider reading

  • Other novels by the same author
  • Other books about the same topic/theme
  • Books/articles about the context of the novel you have chosen

Research

  • About the author of the novel you have chosen
  • About the subject matter of the novel you have chosen
  • About current affairs behind the news headlines/topics you are exploring

Preparation for Year 10:

Next year you will begin your GCSEs.  The texts we cover at QE are Animal Farm, Macbeth and ‘A Christmas Carol’. If you are able to access these texts you could prepare yourself by reading them ahead of time or watching TV/film adaptations of them to support your understanding of the stories.

Remember – the best way to develop your literacy and English skills is regular reading so the more you do of that the better!

Students will find a Year 9 History course within the History folder on Moodle.

So far students have completed work on the following: the abolition of slavery, slavery rebellion, the fall of the British Empire and a case study on the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

During this half term (1 June – 17 July 2020) students will be focusing on studying a new topic: Power and the People which will build upon the work they have completed before the May half term holiday.

Students will be completing work on the rights of an individual in today’s society, how a political system works and how we are governed and comparing this with the rights of people in Medieval England. The students will focus on key events such as the signing of the Magna Carta, the creation of Parliament by Simon de Montfort and the Peasants’ Revolt to understand how people began to protest in order to get more rights. Miss Smith will also be providing the students with videoed explanations of some of the key concepts and events they will be studying this half term via the Moodle page.

Work is being regularly updated by Miss Smith and so students should ensure that they are accessing the Year 9 History course on a weekly basis. Each week’s work will be clearly labelled and within the folder will be a document with the tasks students should complete. Students should do their best to complete all work given. If they have a query, then they can contact their History teacher via their school email address. This work is particularly important for those students who will be studying GCSE History next year.

Students should continue to submit their work via our Moodle page as there will be a submission folder for each week’s work. Students can either complete their work electronically and submit it or they can take screen shots of their work and upload them via the submission folder.

If your son/daughter have any questions please ask them to email their subject teacher using the email at the top of the Moodle page.

Update w/c 13 July 2020: For the last week’s Maths work, we have provided a summary set of questions with full worked solutions to summarise the new key topics that have been set on MyMaths and Dr Frost since Easter. This is to replace MyMaths and Dr Frost for the final week’s work. On the Maths Moodle page for Year 9/10 are copies of the booklet and solutions (also available below) and a hints and tips booklet to give some guidance on each topic. There are also some extra challenge questions with solutions for any students wanting additional work. The worksheet is split into sections for each topic and the questions get progressively more difficult within each section.

There is now a Moodle course entitled Yr9/10 Help videos that has the scheme of work since lockdown, help videos for each week and some extra worksheet resources. Please email Miss Alpin at ralpin@qehs.net with any suggestions for new videos.

  • All classes in Years 9–11 now have accounts on DrFrostMaths.com and MyMaths.
  • All classes in Years 9–11 will be set 4 hours of work by their Maths teacher per week.
  • Work will be set every Monday by class teachers with a deadline 7 days later (1 week).
  • Some classes (9q5,9q6 and 9e6) will also be given SumDog logins by their class teacher to access more specialised material.

Year 9

  • 2 x hours of MyMaths per week
  • 2 x hours of DrFrost per week

Students that are well will be expected to complete the work set on MyMaths and DrFrost.

Unless unwell, students should aim to complete around 1 hour of maths per lesson. We would suggest sitting down at a table or desk with minimum distractions to try and ensure concentration. There are many more websites out there that students may wish to use in addition to our suggestions, but we would expect that all students will be using DrFrost and MyMaths in the first instance.

Often, questions online can be challenging when completed without doing some working out and therefore we would encourage students to have their book and a calculator at hand. Students can date and title lessons accordingly and take down any notes if necessary.

How to use MyMaths

Students will be allocated tasks on MyMaths by their class teacher every Monday. To find work, click on the ‘homework’ tab at the top left of the page.

Students must remember to click ‘mark’ and ‘save’ once they have completed a task so that their answers can be seen by their class teacher.

Class teachers will provide additional feedback after the deadline has passed and students can access this feedback on the ‘feed’ tab in the top left of the screen (beneath homework). Students can also work through lessons on MyMaths by using the search bar and class teachers will direct students to specific topics if and when needed.

How to use DrFrostmaths.com – any issues contact ralpin@qehs.net

Student username: firstnamesurname@qehs.net

Password: password (you will then be prompted to change this the first time you log in)

To access tasks click on work set. Here students can access any feedback on tasks they have completed as well. To get extra help click on the learn tab at the top to access videos on each topic.

Lessons 1 – 4 (March/April)

From Easter to May

Year 9–10 Bridging Work 2020

Welcome to the course!

Within Sport Science throughout Years 10 and 11 you will do the following units of work:

Year 10

1. Applying principles of training (coursework unit)

2. Reducing the risk of sports injuries (exam unit)

Year 11

1. Sports nutrition (coursework unit)

2. Technology in sport (coursework unit)

Over the next few weeks you will be doing a number of research-based tasks to prepare you, for your first unit of work.

Task 1

When you go to the gym or train for any sport it is very important that you make progress. In order to get better, a performer uses something that is referred to as the ‘Principles of Training’.

There are 5 principles that you will need to research:

  • Progression
  • Specificity
  • Reversibility/Regression
  • Moderation
  • Variance

Try to find out what each training principle is and how it is linked to training within a gym setting. Most aspects are linked to making improvements with the exception of reversibility/regression. If possible, type your work and save it to your computer. If this is not possible, hand-write your research.

Task 2

Please start by watching the following video. Only watch the first 6 minutes.

FITT Principle (this is the video link in case the hyperlink doesn’t work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHntMdrf_4s)

You now need to complete the following table:

Principle of training

What does the letter stand for? e.g. Frequency

Can you give examples of how this principle could be used by a team player working within a fitness suite?

e.g. A footballer player goes to the gym 3 times a week.

F

I

T

T

Task 3

Components of Fitness

There are 7 different components of fitness that you need to learn about:

  1. Strength
  2. Power
  3. Agility
  4. Balance
  5. Flexibility
  6. Muscular endurance
  7. Cardiovascular endurance

For each component of fitness, you need to find a definition, and give sporting examples of when that component would be used. Please make sure you fully explain your answers.

For example, ‘A footballer needs flexibility’ is not good enough. A football goalkeeper needs flexibility to be able to reach for the ball when someone strikes a ball in the top corner. (This is a detailed example)

Task 4

PAR Q

Before anyone can join a gym, they should fill in a form called a PAR Q. This stands for ‘Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire’.

I would like you to use the internet or your phone to find three different examples of a PAR Q form. Look at what information the form asks for, if possible print one out and fill it in.

When the form has been completed, consider the following points:

  • Why do you think it is important that the form is filed in?
  • As a client, why would it be important to tell the truth on the form?
  • Can you think of any settings other than a gym who might use this or a similar form?

Task 5

Fitness Tests

There are lots of different fitness tests that can be carried out to assess how fit an individual is. In lessons you will be expected to take part in the following fitness tests:

Standing broad jump – this test measures power.

Standing stork test – this test measures balance.

Sit and reach test – this test measures flexibility.

30 second sit up test – this test measures muscular endurance.

The multistage fitness test – this test measures cardiovascular endurance.

Illinois agility test – this test measures agility.

Trunk Dynamometer test – this test measures strength. (You might need to search for arm, leg and back dynamometer).
