  • Work Experience Week – w/c Monday 8th June 2026 – Year 12 students undertake a compulsory week of work experience to give a greater understanding of the world of work in their chosen area and help build links for future employment opportunities. Destination STEM  – Applications Open Now.

We have an exciting local summer placement opportunity for students with an interest in STEM skills and subjects. These placements take place during the summer holidays and are designed to provide a meaningful research experience, enabling students to gain real-world STEM workplace exposure while developing valuable research skills and industry insight.

Completing a short research placement over the summer can help strengthen university applications and give students a competitive advantage for future study and employment.

Key details are outlined below:

Placement duration: 1–2 weeks between 20th July and 28th August 2026
Bursary: £135 to support travel and other expenses
Eligibility: To be eligible, students must:

  • Be over 16 years old and in Year 12
  • Be in full-time, state-funded education in the UK
  • Have at least 5 GCSEs at Level 5 or above, OR Scottish Nationals at Level B or above, including maths, a science subject, and English (or another humanities subject)
  • Be studying one or more A-levels or Scottish Highers (or equivalent) in science, technology, engineering, economics, geography, psychology, computing, statistics, or maths

Additionally, students must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be living, or have lived, in local authority care
  • Be a carer
  • Come from a family with a combined household income below £40,000 a year (pre-tax)
  • Be entitled to free school meals, either now or at any time in the last six years
  • Be in receipt of, or entitled to, discretionary payments at school/college (e.g., EMA, 16–19 Bursary Fund)
  • Be the first in their immediate family to participate in higher education (not including any older siblings)

The Vindolanda Trust – Application Window: Opens  January

The Vindolanda Trust is offering an exciting work experience programme for students aged 16 – 17 that lets you dive into the world of heritage, culture, archaeology and the fascinating Roman history of Hadrian’s Wall. This work experience would especially suit students who are interested in Heritage, Culture and Museums. However, there are a variety of careers within the heritage sector, and so this programme could meet a broad range of interests and subjects, including STEM.

You’ll spend the week at the award-winning Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda Fort and Museum, getting up close with archaeological excavations at Roman Magna and Vindolanda Fort. You’ll even help with post-excavation processes and see how we preserve the amazing artefacts we find.

Our Work Experience weeks will be 8th June – 12th June & 29th June – 3rd July 2026. Application forms will be released in January 2026.

Adapt (North East) is looking for friendly, community-minded volunteers to support the smooth running of our Adapt Community Hub — a warm, inclusive space offering connection, wellbeing activities and support for people facing loneliness, disability, poor mental health or financial hardship.

As a Community Hub Support Worker, you will:

  • Spend time listening and building relationships with those who attend the hub

Vattenfall Wind Power:

Vattenfall, a Swedish company head-quartered in Stockholm, is one of Europe’s largest producers of electricity and low-carbon heating with operations across northern Europe. Vattenfall has had an office in Hexham employing nearly 100 staff for the past 14 years. They are offering a number of students the opportunity to work with them for a week to look at a broad range of roles in the vibrant and growing renewable energy sector – from civil and electrical engineers and wind farm technicians, through to ecological and environmental analysis, project management, communications, and law. Students will have the opportunity to learn from a number of Vattenfall employees about jobs and routes into the renewable energy sector, have a guided tour of our Ray onshore wind farm near Otterburn, and work together to design their own wind farm.
