Durham Regatta

QEHS competed at the famous Durham Regatta this weekend. The Durham Regatta dates back to 1834 and is the second-oldest regatta in England after Chester, predating the Henley Royal Regatta by five years.

We had a large number of athletes competing across a range of categories, making for a long day full of complex organisation. The coaches deserve great credit for ensuring the day ran so smoothly.

Competition at Durham Regatta is always very tough, but it was brilliant to see that we had two winning crews. The Year 9 boys’ octuple sculls won (Magnus, Cameron, Theo, Callum, Hamish, Freddie, Isaac, James and cox Madeline), and this success was matched by the Year 9 girls’ quad (Ella, Flo, Annabelle, Gaby and cox Libby). It is fantastic to see our newer rowers beginning to fulfil their potential, which bodes well for competitions next year.

Winners at this event attend a formal presentation evening held after racing on Sunday evening. It takes place in a marquee next to the river and is a memorable occasion for those fortunate enough to win their event.

Coach Ellen commented on how proud she was of all the athletes: ‘Well done to everyone who raced today! You all rowed brilliantly and made the club proud (as usual!) – keep smashing it!’

Thank you to coaches Pam, Ellen, Evie and Kevin for preparing the athletes so well. It is wonderful to see such passion for rowing from our young people – rowing truly is life-changing for QEHS rowers.

Respect. Engage. Aspire.
